the platers-the second between spark and flame EP on indie mp3 records

the latest release form the enviably reliable indiemp3 records is the superb EP by London post punkers the platers. layerd with a thick mid-80's dust(no bad thing)the EP is a worthy investment.
the title track of the impressively structured release is a slow burning beauty with a seriously pretty chorus with pin-picked chords and a vocal that recalls a working mans club Bowie going to the lesser free trade hall in 1977.
the moody 'unwise', with its lamenting lyrics and two chord backbone, recalls the doors's robbie kreiger jamming with echo and the bunnymen. classy and noir and mustily sad.
my favourite track here is the jaunty, 'lets take the world tonight, johnny' which is exhilarating to the point of exhaustion. its like being taken to town by a pissed up nice uncle. it makes you want to get up and do SOMETHING.its the sort of song that spills pints at gigs.
the set is delicately, classily closed with 'down the works' a dreamy, atmospheric stare-out-the-train-window treat. day dreamy and disarming, its a lullaby for the doomed.

the label has done itself proud again, this EP is a cracker. its released TODAY and is available from here-http://www.indie-mp3records.co.uk/

the candy twins

hailing from london via twickenham and molesy, THE CANDY TWINS's 'happy families' is classic, ballboy-ish indie. its dirty bass and naggy, relentless riff leads you to an almost smithsy little chorus.

'until the daydream dies' is better, a sad little tale of the end of a relationship. its opening soft, drifty jangle which opens you up to a chimey pounder. its main selling point is its sublime chorus, that makes you swallow your already broken heart. it really is a gem.

also worth a lesson 'edwyn collins is back' which is a heartfelt, fans eye view love letter to the former orange juicer. you will see yourself in this song.

the seven inches

indie-mp3 records signing THE SEVEN INCHES are gamely trying to rub out the name k*i*e* c*e*f* off the Leeds map with their accomplished, whip tight indie pop. 'openness and honesty', the title track off their indie-mp3 ep, is sugar rushy indie pop which has surely been designed in a lab somewhere for the purpose of being played just as you re feeling a bit tipsy at your local indie disco. sugar rush-y, with sublime bass runs and lyrics of just the right sentiment, is self assured without showing off, peeking with a nico-in-a-cardigan chorus. great stuff.

'rowing song' is not-quite-a-minute of be shaded surf pop, it has a wonderful sixties organ riff running through it like a vein. this really wouldn't be out of place in a tarantino film.

the admiringly confident 'to boldly go' is cracking slab of riffy anything-can-happen, fuck it-ness. a real head nodding, leg pumping, swelling(gentle) call to arms.how can you not love a song that contains the lyrics 'my turn, my turn, I'm not frightened, my only drug will be excitement'? the seven inches are confident with big hearts rather than big heads. i predict a quiet riot.
