American Dollar

As anyone who has found a screwed up £5 note in an old pair of trousers knows, life can sometimes give you a nice little surprise every now and then. Take for example, gentle reader, the story of American Dollar. They sent me an invite on that Myspace, and ignoring the judge/book/cover rule, i immediately decided that i wouldn't like them because of their name. How wrong i was.

Instrumentals filled to the brim with atmospherics, this is perfect travel music. i remember ages ago reading a review of 'A storm in heaven' by Verve, which stated the case that even if it wasn't your cup of tea, if you put the cassette (that's how long ago it was)on in your car whilst stuck in a traffic jam, it would transport you to another world. This is the case with American Dollar.

A clean rush of sound, AD ( i can call them that, were friends) do a canny trick of playing dreamy music without relying on fuzz or haze. Take for example 'Fade In Out', which starts up as perfect, mind hugging stare-out-the-window music before breaking down into a pretty piano led middle eight, to going almost silent but for a heartbeat bass line, before exploding into life around 3:20 to push your heart through your rib cage at the sheer joy of it all. Get this band on your ipod next time you've got a boring journey. I'm actually looking forward to the journey to London popfest now. Full of surprises life.
